Instead try to make your turns as wide as possible to allow trains to go at full speed around them. * An inexpensive way to make a canal is creating pseudo canals. * Bribing costs a lot and sometimes you get found out. Plant many trees around a town to increase your rating if possible. * If you want to build train station near to town, it is good to connect it with an airport. As you can see on the picture, airport is able to spread its influence much more than train station, so you get much more passengers and mail.
